In the aftermath of the 2008 elections, where an African-American was elected president, there was widespread consensus that anyone in America, regardless of race, gender or creed, could aspire to become anything, even president! We hailed it at the time as evidence of American Exceptionalism, without realizing that this could also be true in the opposite/negative.
The 2016 presidential election pitted against each other, two New Yorkers who couldn’t be more different. Donald Trump, a novice politician, emerged from a crowded GOP field while Hillary Clinton, erstwhile Senator and Secretary of State, emerged for the Democrats.
